Lipid raft

The plasma membranes of cells contain combinations of glycosphingolipids and protein receptors organized in glycolipoprotein microdomains termed lipid rafts. Lipid rafts are disbursed through the cell membrane and play important roles in protein and lipid transport, as well as cell signaling.

A study of patients with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome for autoimmunoreactive IgGs to lipid raft proteins in the heart.[1] Patients with chronic fatigue syndrome were found to have decreased sphingolipids and glycosphingolipids, building blocks of lipid rafts.[2]
